For 100 years, the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has been at the forefront of bringing new approaches to treating patients who are in mental distress. We are internationally recognised as an expert in the health, charity, voluntary and private sectors and are proud to have developed and delivered ground breaking mental health services that make a real difference to communities.
Feel, connect and learn
Parallel to providing a wide range of clinical services, the Trust is also a Postgraduate Higher Education provider, regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and supported by Health Education England (HEE). Our students are based in London at the Tavistock Centre and across the UK and Europe with our carefully selected partners.
Our programmes of study are suitable for a range of people working in different sectors, including healthcare, mental health, education, social care, consultancy and criminal justice. Many of our programmes are based on an escalator model from introductory Trust Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas through to more specialist Masters and Doctorate level programmes to support the development of expertise in particular specialisms.
In addition, we welcome many professionals to over 80 CPD short courses every year.
Unique Learning
We are delighted to be able to offer our students a unique education that includes academic qualifications validated by the University of Essex coupled with learning in a working NHS mental health clinic. What’s more, the clinicians that treat our patients, teach our students so the training they receive is based on real-time and relevant case studies that are reflective of what society needs from mental health professionals in both clinical and non-clinical roles such as social work and management and leadership.
Flexible Learning
We are able to offer accessible, flexible and personalised Postgraduate Higher Education to those of varying levels of expertise – some of our students are returning to study and wish to develop knowledge, skills and experience in their current work environment; others are wanting to pursue a new career in mental health. Some study with us via online and blended learning; they achieve their goals by working online and in the classroom.
From September 2020, we will be teaching students all over the world via our brand new Digital Academy which will allow you to access our world-class educational content wherever you are, at a time and pace that suits you. Please see tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/training/digital-academy/ for more information.
Recognised Learning
Our relevant courses are accredited and recognised by the main professional bodies in the mental health sector. These include:
Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP)
Association of Family Therapists (AFT)
The British Psychanalytic Council (BPC)
British Psychological Society (BPS)
We would always encourage people to come and visit us to meet our current students and clinician-tutors. We host a number of Open Days throughout the year, as well as course specific coffee mornings and events. Please see www.tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/OpenDay for full dates and details of how to book your place.
