City & Guilds of London Art School

A real art school

City & Guilds of London Art School is a small not-for-profit, specialist higher education institution, located in the heart of Kennington since 1879 and dedicated to educating the artists, carvers and conservators of tomorrow. We are committed to the idea of ‘learning through making’. An emphasis on material understanding, traditional skills, experimentation and research, combined with contextual art historical education, underpins our teaching. Individual studio space & diverse facilities

Students benefit from working in a small community with a generous tutor-to-student ratio and teaching by artists and practitioners at the top of their professional fields. We recognise the centrality of the studio as a place for creative endeavour, exploration of skills and embodied knowledge. As well as generous studio spaces, students have access to a broad range of specialist technical facilities such as a print room, wood workshop, bronze casting, etching and glass-working, all staffed by expert Technicians and Fellows who are successful practicing professionals.

A rich curriculum

We combine skills-based teaching with contextual Art Histories and History of Ideas programmes that employ London’s Museums and galleries as a crucial resource for regular targeted study trips. Drawing is fundamental to all our courses with a dedicated Drawing Studio open to all, while the fruitful cross-pollination of subjects helps students to develop a deeper understanding of their practice.

Strong industry links & exciting live projects

Our strong links with industry and collaborations with a wide variety of organisations provide opportunities for our students to work on exciting live commissions and take part in high-profile projects, giving them invaluable experience and preparation for a career in their chosen sector. Recent examples are projects commissioned as part of the restoration of Southwark Cathedral and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor as well as the conservation of historic objects from major collections and initiatives in sites as eminent as Westminster Abbey and San Giorgio Maggiore Basilica in Venice.

Large range of bursaries

We maintain our fees in line with UK degrees while upholding a commitment to high levels of contact time with active professionals. The Historic Carving 3-year Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma (the only full-time study of carving available at this level in the UK) are subsidised by the Art School with even lower fees. Our Higher Education courses benefit from considerable bursary support from a wide range of generous benefactors and most students on our Historic Carving courses will be able to access bursaries to cover varying portions of the course fees.

As a specialist skills provider, our graduates are sought after and go on to careers as contemporary artists, carvers and conservators, as well as pursuing further study and research.
