Independent Higher Education welcomes new student board member

17 August 2021

Independent Higher Education (IHE) is pleased to welcome Sophie McCarthy to its Board as an independent student member. Sophie, a graduating student at the Academy of Contemporary Music, has been appointed for a term of two years and will provide an invaluable student perspective on the IHE Board. During her time on the Board, Sophie will also lead the Student Advisory Group for the Many Hands Project, a collaborative initiative by seven IHE members to support student mental health, which was announced today as winning a landmark funding competition from the Office for Students.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Roxanne Stockwell, Chair of IHE’s Board, said:

“Many students choose independent providers because of their commitment to a more personalised, student-centred approach to learning, as well as their deep focus on employability outcomes. We are pleased to be the first higher education representative body in the UK to match this commitment to students by giving them equal status around our Board table. I look forward to the new perspective that Sophie will bring to our meetings and to IHE’s leadership role in the sector.”

Commenting on her appointment Sophie McCarthy said:

“I am very pleased to be appointed as the first student representative on the IHE Board and I look forward to sharing a collective student voice on behalf of all those studying at independent higher education providers in the UK. I’m particularly excited to be leading the Student Advisory Group to the Many Hands Project. Student mental health is something I’m especially passionate about and it’s a privilege to be part of this important and timely initiative by IHE members.”
