IHE responds to PM’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee

Responding to the Prime Minister’s Statement, Alex Proudfoot, Chief Executive of Independent Higher Education said:

“The economic challenges facing the UK are unprecedented and necessitate major reforms to our education, skills and lifelong learning system.

“Meeting the urgent education and training needs of every worker, with funding which follows the student, will help our economy adapt to the turbulence ahead, and the introduction of a Lifetime Skills Guarantee will quickly become a safety net we all rely on. We particularly welcome the Prime Minister’s recognition that flexible delivery and the expansion of short, modular professional courses and technical training will be essential to achieving this ambition for the country, and that new funding mechanisms will be required.

“Independent providers in the higher education sector, most of them SMEs, already deliver just the kind of flexible, career-oriented, high-skilled professional programmes the Prime Minister wants to expand. They have the organisational agility to respond to these bold reforms at pace to help specific industries and the country as a whole to build back better.

“The Government can help them go further by ensuring an SME-friendly tertiary education system in regulation, funding and targeted support for the innovative start-ups and scale-ups which can turbocharge the UK’s productivity in the years ahead.”
