21 February 2020 – Webinar: OfS Consultation on Harassment and Sexual Misconduct

Tackling sexual misconduct and harassment in higher education is becoming an increasingly importance aspect of the Office for Students’ approach to student welfare. In Autumn 2019, IHE hosted a workshop with OfS looking at student welfare and the looking at what may be included in OfS’s approach to this area. Following on from recent sector reports in this area, the Office for Students is consulting with the sector on the expectations of higher education providers dealing with harassment and sexual misconduct and how the OfS should regulate in this space.

The consultation on harassment and sexual misconduct is set out in three parts: the scope of the proposals and proposed approach; the proposed statement of the OfS’s expectations for the prevention of harassment and sexual misconduct and addressing it when it occurs; and proposals for the approach to assessing compliance with existing ongoing conditions of registration. The questions of the consultation follow these three areas. The deadline for the consultation is 27 March 2020 and higher education providers are encouraged to complete the consultation.

This webinar will cover the key areas of the consultation to support the development of the Independent HE response as well as giving members the tools to submit a response on behalf of their institution. It will look into the questions in more depth and how independent providers can share their experience and knowledge of dealing with sexual misconduct and harassment with providers. The webinar will be led by Joy Elliott-Bowman, Director of Policy and Development at Independent HE.
