Independent Higher Education welcomes today’s release of the government’s landmark consultation on how the new Office for Students will operate.
The Office for Students will introduce the new regulatory framework for the sector: ‘a risk-based approach to higher education with an unflinching focus on the student’. The consultation sets out the proposed new regulatory approach and what this will mean for the sector and students. This includes proposals on:
- how higher education providers will enter the system
- how they will be risk-assessed
- the conditions they will have to meet
- how they will be monitored
- and what potential actions the OfS will be able to take.
You can view and respond to the consultation here: Securing student success: risk based regulation for teaching excellence, social mobility and informed choice in higher education. The consultation closes on 22nd December 2017.
Commenting on the release, Independent HE Chief Executive, Alex Proudfoot said:
“Independent Higher Education welcomes this landmark consultation on how the new Office for Students will exercise its duties and powers.
“Independent HE represents providers old and new, large and small, who place the needs of students first through their commitment to quality, relevance and tireless innovation in their provision. For years now, our members have called for a single regulatory system, built on fair and transparent processes, which allows them to show where they excel and which gives their students equal access to the information, funding and opportunities available in the higher education sector. Today’s consultation sets out how this system might operate in practice and we will be delighted to respond on behalf of the independent sector.
“We believe that the time is right for a revolution in student choice, innovation and competition which helps to raise the aspirations of all students and drive English higher education to new international heights. This consultation takes us one large step closer to this goal, and we look forward to working with the Office for Students to make this bold vision a reality.”
