Independent Higher Education has responded to the Prime Minister’s announcement that there will be a major review of higher education funding in England, which was made during Theresa May’s party conference speech in Manchester yesterday.
Commenting on the announcement, Independent HE Chief Executive, Alex Proudfoot said:
“We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of a review of student finance yesterday, which should take a broad view of affordability, access and innovation across the English tertiary education system.
“The UK has led the world in higher education for centuries, and can lead it again with new approaches which reflect the changing nature of work and learning today. To succeed in this, however, the funding rules need to support the aspirations of non-traditional students by incentivising different models of provision including flexible, accelerated and blended learning, modular and interdisciplinary degrees, high-quality apprenticeships and higher technical programmes.
“A comprehensive review which takes on these challenges could transform the opportunities available to students. It must first recognise that for a generation who may have several careers in their lifetime, acquiring the knowledge and skills they will need does not start and end with a three-year degree.”
